2nd Annual Family Day: Celebrating Latino culture
The Lancaster Museum of Art would like to thank our community for their support of our Second Annual Family Day at the Museum Celebrating Latino Culture held on Saturday, October 12!
Students created a variety of Latino arts and craft projects, learned salsa and Zumba©, toured a fire truck, and met the Barnstormer’s Cylo. Members of the Lancaster City police department and a representative from PCAD were available to talk with students and parents. Superintendent of the School District of Lancaster, Pedro Rivera, addressed the crowd in support of educating our youth in the arts and culture. Attendees watched a soccer demonstration, viewed artwork created by SDoL high school students, listened to two wonderful young vocalists and were entertained by a Latino Dance performance. They enjoyed hot dogs, drinks, snacks and a variety of traditional Latino food - all free of charge, thanks to donations from our local businesses and community. All students received free books of their choice at the end of the day, thanks to donations by local teachers.
Because of the generosity of Turkey Hill, Herr Foods and other community sponsors, we were also able to provide snacks, drinks, and books to 55 students from the YWCA after school program during three, one-hour workshops at the Museum, and another student group from San Juan Batista church.

Also, a big thanks to all of our volunteers who spent the day at the Museum teaching about Latino Culture!
Summer Art Camp Students Visit LMA!
This past August, students from Wheatland Middle School's summer arts institute, "Stars and Stripes," came to LMA for a tour of the Community Art Exhibition and a workshop led by LMA Board member Jan Mindish.

March 1: First Friday Scholastics Opening and Awards Ceremony
The Museum was packed wall to wall with student artists, friends and family attending the awards ceremony and applauding the efforts of our young artists.
During March, the Museum hosted three groups of high school students and three groups of elementary students, bringing in over 70 students to enjoy the artwork.
March 13: Museum visit by Penn Manor High School ESL program, 10AM- noon
Students participated in a discussion tour of the show, exploring the story behind selected work and discussing media and technique. They then enjoyed a pizza lunch in the gallery.
March 15: Museum visit by Penn Manor Alternative Education students, 2-4 PM
Students participated in a discussion tour of the show, exploring the story behind selected work and discussing media and technique.
March 15: Museum visit and art class for elementary students in San Juan Batista Church after school program, 4-5 PM
Students participated in a discussion tour of the show, prior to an art lesson conducted in the Armstrong Gallery. They created mixed media animals.
March 16: Saturday at the Museum for area high school art students, 11AM-2PM
Students from four area high schools participated in a discussion tour of the show, exploring the story behind selected work and discussing media and technique. They enjoyed a pizza lunch in the gallery then walked to MU’s Ware Center to view the Young Artist exhibit. The group made a stop at the Art Shop to check out supplies before ending the day back at LMA.

Family Day at the Museum Celebrating Latino Culture was a huge success. Over 100 students and nearly 200 adults attended. Students created Ferrer-style maps along with a variety of Latino craft projects, including flags and maracas. They learned about Rafael Ferrer and his life story, played soccer, learned salsa and zumba along with traditional percussion instruments. They enjoyed hot dogs, drinks, snacks and a variety of traditional Latino food - all free of charge, thanks to donations from our businesses and community. All students received free books of their choice at the end of the day, again, thanks to donations by local teachers.

LMA hosts local art students
The Lancaster Museum of Art’s Education Committee hosted a group of art students from a cross-section of Lancaster County high schools for a day of artful interaction. The students and several teachers started out their day at the Museum, browsing the Scholastic Art Awards exhibitions. Any students with work in the show had the opportunity to discuss the creative process, share techniques and answer questions from their peers.
Next, the students discussed and critiqued the artwork they created in response to a February 11 tour of the Lancaster Lens photography exhibition. The students impressed with their artwork and with their level of engagement and discussion.
Following a pizza lunch in the inspiring surroundings of Tellus360, a downtown shop and gallery space, the students continued on to the Ware Center for a viewing of the Lancaster County Young Artists exhibition. Once again, any exhibiting artists had the chance to speak about their work and take questions from their peers.

The Power of Collaboration: A free teen workshop demonstrating the power of a collaborative partnership between writers and artists
On Saturday, March 17, 15 local students attended a free workshop run by Eric Thiegs of stageoflife.com. Eric generously shared his personal and business experiences in launching a blogging and writing initiative that collaborated with an artist to create the original artwork and branding for their nationally recognized website.

Thank you to all of the teens that participated! The kids were so bright and engaged, which was encouraging and inspiring to see. Also, a big thank you to Eric for his time and for communicating so well with the students!

On Saturday morning, February 11, fifteen high school art students from Hempfield, McCaskey and Penn Manor met at the Lancaster Museum of Art to view the Lancaster Lens Exhibit and talk with six of the photographers. Pat Cooney, K.K DePaul, Barb Dombach, John Flinchbaugh, Shauna Frischkorn, and Blake Ziegler each discussed their work with the students and answered their questions.
Accompanied by art teachers, Amy Edwards and Cassie Shelling, and LMA Education Committee members, Jan Mindish and Jim Gallagher, the group then walked to Tellus360 for lunch. Thanks to Isaac’s for donating sandwiches for lunch and Tellus360 for offering their space for the meal and follow-up discussion.
Students reflected on what they learned during the morning and will be creating a response piece in their medium of choice.
The group will be meeting again on March 24 to view the Scholastic Art Show at the Museum. They will share their response pieces and discuss the Scholastic Exhibit over lunch again at Tellus360.

The Lancaster Museum of Art hopes to continue to offer experiences such as this to support the arts education provided in our local schools.
