ADULT CLASSES

*Unless otherwise noted, adult classes DO NOT include the cost of materials.
Materials lists are available from the Museum.

Classes must have a minimum of 5 students to run.If this minimum enrollment is not reached 5 days prior to the first class session, the class will be canceled and tuition will be refunded.

Artful Adornments:
Thinking Outside the Jewelry Box.

Learn how to make extraordinary jewelry out of ordinary objects from an avant garde jewelry and accessories designer. Participants will learn how to transform buttons, hardware, jar lids, and other forgotten artifacts into earrings, pendants, bracelets, and pins.

A materials list will be given to each student.

Beginning Watercolor

For the true beginner! Loosen up, have fun & explore the basic concepts and techniques involved with watercolor painting.

Beginning Pastels

Participants will learn and explore a variety of basic techniques of applying pastels through strokes, optical color mixing, blending, and layering. Demonstrations, drawing fundamental reviews and encouragement will be given to help students advance their skills and further understand value & texture. Types of pastels, color choices, support, fixing and framing of work will be discussed.

Needle Felting Fun

"Learn how to needle felt! In this simple introductory workshop students will start by needle felting easy images onto a piece of felt. The subject matter comes from student's imagination and is guided by the instructor. These whimsical projects will be mounted and finished with individual creative touches."

Batik Workshop

Explore an art form that dates back to China as early as 500 AD. The process of batiking uses wax and dye to make beautiful pieces of fabric that can be used for a number of different functions. Participants are encouraged to use their creativity and experiment with this ancient, yet non-traditional media.

Exploring the Narrative, Exploding the Book

Investigate the “book” and develop ways to reinterpret it. Using their own stories, participants will create visual narratives that can be conveyedthrough a variety of contemporary twists on what we know as the “book”. Projects will include:creating a book based on found objects, altering existing books to create new stories and exploring a variety of three dimensional book structures.

Traditional Realism in Colored Pencil – NEW – TWO DAY WORKSHOP

This two day workshop will emphasize traditional and realistic approaches to still life. The class is aimed towards artists of all levels, though drawing abilities are helpful. Elements of art and composition such as perspective, shadowing, texturing, color layering and subject placement will be addressed. Prior to the hands-on segment, Richard will give a slide presentation offering insights into the development and direction of his art. He will discuss the environments he creates along with the reasoning and methods that he employs in the journey to the finished work.

Beginning Ceramics

Learn to make functional and decorative ceramics on the wheel and by hand-building. Mugs, vases, plates & bowls are just a few of the creations to be made. Basic construction skills are taught, as well as glazing and firing. Bring a towel to class. All materials (up to 25 lbs. of clay) and firing charges included in class fee.

Clay Patterns

This class will focus on the use of paper patterns and slab hand-building techniques to create ceramic forms. Participants will have an opportunity to make several forms (cups, boxes and vases) using predetermined patterns, then use what was learned to create patterns of their own.

Drawing I

Participants will explore color theory, texture, composition, light/shadow and negative/positive shape using pencil, charcoal, pastels, chalk and ink on paper.

Participants will continue to explore the basic elements of design and drawing, with an emphasis of self-expression and experimentation.

On the Surface - Glazing Tips and Tricks

This workshop offers an opportunity to focus the surface. After building simple forms, participants will be introduced to several glazing techniques, including slip trailing, resist glazing and masking. Experiment with manipulating the glazes and slips to create interesting and dynamic surfaces. Bring bisque-ware if you have it.

Intro to Painting - A brush with paint!

See the world through new eyes and explore the world of paint. Find out what exactly is in those tubes and what’s the point of a bevy of brushes. Using both acrylic and oil paint, this class covers materials, surfaces, tools and techniques.

A basic knowledge of color mixing and drawing is helpful, but certainly not required.

Open Watercolor Studio

For the beginner with limited experience, or the intermediate who just needs a little coaching, these studio sessions are for everyone! Participants can learn basic concepts and techniques of watercolor painting or advance their own skills.

Pastel Portraits

For the beginner or intermediate, this class will work from instructor’s materials and students’ photos. Instruction will begin with a study of each feature of the face, proportions of the face, profile, view and full view of face. Demonstrations will also cover application techniques and color choices.

Find the Art in You

A collage workshop is a creative opportunity to combine images and make art. Creating a “work of art” is an experience about itself. It is about relationships between images and ideas, connecting yourself with where you want your art to go. You will discover and explore your personal creativity and artistic ideas through collage!
